British Voice coach, Yvonne Morley-Chisholm will take you through a five week course to learn an authentic Standard English accent. As an actor, whether you work on stage, screen or in the voice studio, this will boost your casting options and add to your overall professional development. It will also appeal to anyone who is a public speaker or who depends on English language communication in their profession.

About The Event

This five week course will focus on acquiring the practical skills to delivering the accent under performance pressure. The course will cover the basics and then take you beyond them into advanced work around inhabiting character and applying this to production work.

You will have the opportunity to perform and receive personal feedback. You'll leave this course with skills that you can apply right away as well as practice techniques to continue your progress.

SESSION OUTLINE
 

Session one: Getting the foundations in place

  • Introductions

  • Physical preparation for RP

  • Music, tune rhythm

  • Cultural preparation to authenticate the accent

  • Vocal choices to sound like a native speaker
     

Session Two: Building on the foundations, R consonant and vowel introduction

  • Warm-up for the RP accent

  • R - and the non-rhotic quality in the accent

  • First pass through the 12 pure vowel sounds
     

Session Three: The consonants and the double vowels in RP

  • Warm up for RP accent

  • The remaining consonants

  • Pure vowels into combination for double vowels / diphthongs
     

Session Four: Putting it all together

  • Warm-up for the RP accent, working in breakout rooms

  • The direction, hesitation sound and other elements to authenticate the accent

  • work on own choice of text to apply the accent
     

Session Five: Drawing it all together and next steps

  • Warm-up for the RP accent

  • Working through your choice of text

  • Practicing and refining the elements and the delivery

  • Delivering authentic performance

For actors, advanced and beginner accent students, and anyone desiring a more authentic RP accent.
 

WHAT DO YOU GET

You'll walk away from this course with a deeper understanding of the Standard English (RP) accent and performance skills. You'll gain ease, clarity, and ownership of its culture, music, rhythm, pronunciation and  sound. You’ll be equipped with a bespoke warm-up designed to engage the parts of your voice necessary for the accent. You will have a methodology to work on text and script for yourself.

ABOUT YVONNE MORLEY-CHISHOLM

Yvonne is an internationally recognised voice teacher and vocal coach with 40 years experience. Her theatre work includes being an associate for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal National Theatre in London and Shakespeare’s Globe, London; work for screen and recorded media include the BBC and a wide range of independent producers. She co-authored a book for occupational voice users called “More Care for Your Voice” and recently published an App (on Apple and Android) called Voice Coach.

Her work in vocal profiling has been used creatively in documentary films and within live stage performances where historical dramatic reconstructions have been created. A Voice for Richard is the first venture into a collaborative research project to give literal voice to a long dead King exploring the medieval accent.
