Discover what becomes possible when your body, breath and voice are free to respond in the moment.

This immersive and playful day offers a practical introduction to Kristin Linklater’s approach to voice and movement. Through physical and vocal exercises, you will explore how releasing unnecessary tension can create greater freedom, ease, range and expressiveness in both your voice and physical presence.

"To Free the Voice is to Free the Person!” - Kristin Linklater

About The Event

The work moves from body and breath awareness into sound, resonance and articulation, gradually connecting the voice to thought, feeling and impulse.

Exploring spoken text is an important part of voice work. Using practical sequences which creatively unlock the meaning of language, you will experiment with how breath, imagination, vocal and physical expression can bring words to life.  This will  enable you to find a more truthful and connected relationship to what you are saying rather than forcing or “performing” a particular emotion or idea.

The aim is not simply to sound ‘better’, but to become more available to the impulses, thoughts and possibilities within the text and to guide your voice to become even more responsive, expressive and alive to spoken language.

The workshop draws on Deb’s qualification as a designated teacher of Kristin Linklater’s voice method, alongside her experience as an international acting and speaking coach. Her approach combines practical voice work with embodied exploration, helping participants discover and develop their own natural vocal and physical resources and potential.

You will gain practical tools to:

  • Release unnecessary physical tension and find greater ease in your body

  • Develop a freer, more connected and responsive breath

  • Access greater vocal range, resonance, clarity and expressive power

  • Connect breath and voice to thought, feeling and impulse

  • Prepare yourself physically and vocally for speaking or performing

  • Approach text with greater freedom, imagination and authenticity

  • Listen and respond more fully to others

  • Take simple exercises into your own practice, whether for performance, speaking or everyday communication

Gavin

"Deb is a joy to work with. She puts you at ease regardless of how little experience or training you have. Her teaching methods help you understand the mechanics of your voice, then how to use it..”

The workshop is open to everyone. Whether you are an actor, performer, singer, public speaker, business professional, teacher, coach or leader — or simply someone who wants to explore their voice and physical expression, and get better at communication, self-awareness and confidence. No previous experience is required.

Come and explore what happens when you give yourself permission to breathe, move, speak and express with greater freedom. Leave with practical tools you can continue to use long after the workshop.

ABOUT LINKLATER VOICE WORK

Kristin Linklater is one of the most established masters of vocal coaching for western actor training and her work continues to grow in popularity across the globe. She developed her work alongside the post Stanislavskian ‘method’ acting practitioners in the United States during the 60’s, 70’s. During this time, psychological realism and emotional truth in performance were paramount. This new wave of actors had all but abandoned current voice and movement work which had come from the early part of the 20th century and was deemed too external.

Kristin offered an approach to working on the voice that embraced the emotion within the human actor being, and allowed for this potential to be revealed through the voice. The emphasis of her work is on the removal of the physical and psychological blocks that inhibit the human instrument. Its objective is a voice that is in direct contact with emotional impulse, shaped by the intellect but not restricted by it.

The method includes a ‘Progression of exercises that take an actor through physical awareness, breathing that is instinctual and responsive to emotional/imaginative stimuli, a voice that is in contact with feeling, resonance that reveals rather that disguises emotion…and language that taps into the intrinsic musicality of the spoken word.  Imagery and ideas are essential for the audience to receive the story so time is also spent embodying this. If the thoughts of the writer and character don’t become part of the actor’s imagination, we hear a list of facts only.

The method is designed to exist alongside contemporary actor training whose objective is to allow an actor to access a balanced quartet of emotion, intellect, voice, and movement.

“The emphasis of the work is to remove the psychological and physical blocks that inhibit the human vocal instrument. It promotes a voice that “is in direct contact with emotional impulse, shaped by the intellect but not restricted by it.”
