The Embodied Actor
LIVE Workshops with Ben Joiner

Postponed - T.B.A.

Helsinki, Finland

acting workshop

Emotion and imagination are two golden keys to help an actor unlock an authentic performance.

How does one access a free emotional facility, or cultivate a boundless imaginative 'muscle'?

This course is taking place live in Helsinki in the beginning of February. In this course Ben Joiner will guide students to explore the nature of embodiment as a resource for a rich emotional and imaginative life. Over the course of four evenings we will look at what stops this potential and discover ways to dissolve these restrictions.  We will notice how the body develops patterns of habitual behaviour to create certainty in our lives...then invite shifts that promote more spontaneity and connection. We will look at how the breath can be used for as a source from which the actor can open up to being changed. We will explore the embodied nature of emotions and learn to find a deeper connection within ourselves. Finally, we will encourage the sensitivity and courage to go beyond our everyday selves and embody a richer response to the imaginative circumstances.

About The Event

This live four evening workshop encourages authenticity, emotional freedom, and a deeper connection to your body and senses. Over the course of the workshop we will look at what an actor can do to create an environment within themselves where more is possible emotionally and imaginatively. We will discover how to develop a sensory connection to the given circumstances and develop tools for transformation in a way that both the actor and the audience really believe what is happening.

As children we are experts at skipping through a kaleidoscope of emotional colours each day with complete ease. We create worlds within worlds and invent realities that match our 'real world' experience. With the obvious benefits of adult maturity sometimes comes a restriction on the exchange of instinctual behaviour and rich imaginative thought. The body-mind-emotion connection takes a back seat in favour of a more efficient, objective, transactional and cognitive form of communication.

In our adult lives we operate around a set of fixed principles. These fixed ideas show up in the way move, feel, speak and think. An actor must learn to unhook themselves from this in order to have more choices available to them in the service of the play/film/etc. They need to live in the moment and respond to every second as if it were really!

Influences in the work: Meisner, Michael Chekov, Feldenkrais, Linklater voice work, Somatics. It will easily acknowledge other mind/body paradigms.

Actors (advanced and beginners), performers and curious people interested in the nature of embodied cognition.

"It was a great pleasure working with Ben. He had such a gentle but professional approach to voice training through movement. Through Ben’s training, I found - and started to release - huge tensions that have been blocking my voice as an actress. I will definitely continue working with Ben in the future as well."

- Johanna Ruonala, Actor

"I really enjoyed our weekend workshop with Ben Joiner. As a classically trained singer, I especially enjoyed the exploration of more primal sounds and how releasing a sound - totally uncontrolled - feels like. It was quite liberating and helped me to connect more with my body and my emotions. We also looked at how an open and receiving body looks and feels like in acting. The exercises for releasing the body through movement and awareness without judgment were just what I needed as well. Ben was an inspiring teacher with a very conscious and compassionate way of teaching, and I would definitely recommend his workshop for anyone wanting to explore their voices, or looking for ways to release tension in the body or for just more freedom of expression."

- Emma, Actor & Singer

"Ben is a brilliant teacher! He’s a genius at what he does and was able to create a supporting and safe learning environment by being a teacher as well as ”a peer” at the same time. He listened to the students’ needs and concerns and allowed for any feelings to arise. I would recommend this workshop for everyone and anyone interested in learning about their voice and how to use it well.
